Here is my first experience scanning an old photo film with the Nikon Coolscan 5000.
Installation: Installation of the Nikon Coolscan 5000 was a straight forward plug-and-play process. The Nikon software automatically downloaded updates from the web and I was ready to scan in 5 minutes.
Preparation: I didn't bother to read the instructions, and I didn't change any scanner software settings. I wanted to see the results I would get by simply pressing "scan" with the default settings. I randomly grabbed an APS film from a manila envelope and started the scanning process.
File Size: The default file format for the scanned file is TIFF.
25 APS photos took 934.8 MB of disk space - ouch. About 37.9MB per photo.
Scanning Time: ~27 minutes, just over 1 minute per photo.
Scan started 8/28/05 1:38:49 AM
Batch scan completed 8/28/05 2:05 AM
Image Quality:
Double click on the thumbnail below to see a 100% crop of the scanned image.
Conclusion:
I better go read the manuals :-) Clearly the default settings are not adequate. For one, Digital Ice is off by default. I will experiment with this some more another day, but I have a feeling this is going to be a year long project...
